A Level 1 Inspection is the most basic and commonly performed inspection. It is recommended when the chimney system is easily accessible and no changes have been made to the system. The inspector examines the readily accessible portions of the chimney, including the exterior, interior, and accessible portions of the appliance and chimney connection. The purpose is to assess the basic soundness of the chimney structure and identify any visible problems or hazards.

A Level 3 inspection is the most detailed and invasive type of inspection. It is conducted when serious hazards or problems are suspected, or when Level 2 inspections are inconclusive.

• Level 3 inspections may involve the removal of components or portions of the building or chimney system to gain access for evaluation.

• This level of inspection is usually performed when there is a strong possibility of hidden hazards or damage.

 

A Level 2 inspection is more comprehensive and is required in certain situations. It is necessary when:

• there are changes to the chimney system, 

• the property is being sold or transferred, 

• or an operational malfunction or external event has occurred

In addition to the components inspected in Level 1, Level 2 inspection also includes accessible portions of attics, crawl spaces, and basements. This involves visual examination, as well as video scanning or other means of inspection to thoroughly evaluate the chimney's condition.
